Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT
330 PM MDT Sat Jul 26 2025
.SYNOPSIS...Hot, dry and breezy conditions will continue to impact
the region through early next week. Heavy wildfire smoke is
expected across southeastern Utah and in the Richfield vicinity
through at least late Sunday.
&&
.DISCUSSION...A warm and very dry southwesterly flow aloft
remains in place over the area. This pattern looks to continue
through the first half of the coming week. Breezy conditions are
noted across much of the area this afternoon. After decreasing for
tonight with the loss of daytime heating and associated mixing,
the winds will pick up again tomorrow, though perhaps slightly
weaker compared to today. Winds will then trend gradually weaker
for Monday and Tuesday.
Wildfire smoke from northern Arizona will continue to drift into
southeast Utah while the southwesterly flow remains in place and
fire activity (primarily from the Dragon Bravo Fire) remains
significant. Reduced visibilities and poor air quality can be
expected to continue in this area, affecting those participating
in outdoor activities. Additionally, smoke emanating from the
Monroe Canyon Fire in central Utah will spread into portions of
north-central and northeast Utah. Similar, but more localized,
impacts are expected with this area of smoke.
Some model solutions continue to bring moisture into the area
around midweek. Isolated high-based showers and thunderstorms
could begin Tuesday or Wednesday, increasing into late week.
However, the moisture plume does not look particularly
significant (PWATs generally less than 1 inch) and as a result,
showers may remain high-based with gusty winds being more likely
than any substantial rain. Cluster analysis of multi-model
ensemble solutions show around 60% of members leaning drier than
the mean with only 40% leaning more wet on Wednesday, with a bit
of a shift towards favoring the wetter solutions by Friday. That
said, an overall drying trend looks to develop by next weekend.
&&
.AVIATION...KSLC...Gusty southerly winds with gusts to 25-30 kts
continue through around 03-04z, becoming lighter out of the
southeast thereafter. Southerly winds increase once again around
09z, with gusts 20-25 kts possible through around 18z. Otherwise,
VFR conditions prevail at the terminal with mostly clear skies
outside of some passing high clouds Sunday morning.
.REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...Gusty southerly to
southwesterly winds will continue for all regional terminals this
afternoon and evening, with gusts generally in the 20-30 kt range.
VFR conditions prevail for most terminals, though sites in close
proximity to the Monroe Canyon and Dragon Bravo fires may see MVFR-
IFR VIS/CIG reductions due to dense surface smoke. Otherwise,
increased concentrations of vertically-integrated smoke may lead to
hazy skies and slantwise visibility reductions across southeast and
eastern Utah.
&&
.FIRE WEATHER...A dry southwesterly flow will remain in place over
the area through the first half of the coming week. Warm
temperatures along with very low humidities, down to the single
digits in many valleys, can be expected during this time. In
addition to low minimum relative humidities, poor overnight
recoveries can be expected, with many valleys failing to see max
humidities reach even 20 or 25%. Gusty winds combining with these
low humidities will result in critical fire weather conditions
across central, southern, and eastern Utah, and more isolated
across northern Utah through Sunday. While winds will then trend
weaker for Monday and Tuesday, isolated pockets of critical fire
weather conditions may continue.
Moisture looks to spread into the area midweek. High-based
showers and isolated thunderstorms may be possible by Tuesday or
Wednesday, with chances increasing through late week before drier
air spreads back into the area. While uncertainty remains, this
moisture may not be significant enough to produce widespread
wetting rain. Rather, dry thunderstorms and gusty outflow winds
seem more likely at this time.
